Between Ricavo and Chiesina streams is placed Marti, whose first documented data go back to 1017 when it is supposed to belong to an ancient parish, the Pieve of Mosciano. Apparently its true origins are much more ancient. Important human settelments were present since the Bronze Age (XIII century BC) even if it was not possible to determine a single urban center, but Marti was then formed by a group of small villages scattered on hills and valleys, as is proved by important archaeological records found in the surrounding areas, dated from XIII century BC to 1st century AD. Marti, or better to say its territory, has been Etruscan, like it documents the most recent discover that many underground premises, used in the centuries as wine cellars or shelters, were in origin Etruscan tombs. Some of these tombs were very important as the one found under the Vicarage or the one situated on the hill of the Bastione. Over the centuries Marti became an important Ghibelline castle ruled by Pisa, then it was conquered by Florence and in 1433 it was destroyed by the Guelph citizens of Montopoli . Today it is still possible to admire some parts of the ancient town-walls.
